ASSEMBLY

HomeBiogas is designed as a DIY product to be put together by one or two people. Every HomeBiogas system comes with a very detailed manual that explains every step of the way. You can watch the assembly process here:

The only method to activate HomeBiogas is using a fresh herbivore’s manure (cow, horse, donkey, pig… They all go in).  It’s an effective, cheap, and easy method! Here’s how it goes:

  1. Fill HomeBiogas with water, until it goes out of the fertilizer outlet
  2. Wait for 24 hours
  3. Add fresh animal manure in the suitable amount as explained in the manual, through the inlet sink.
  4. Close the inlet and wait for the magic to happen.

The process should be made at 25C/ 77F and takes approximately 1-3 weeks to be completed.

Remember: Activation is a vital part of any HomeBiogas system, it is the way the bacteria are introduced to the system. Nailing this stage means a healthy and productive system!

BEST CONDITIONS

Distance from the system:

– If the toilet bowl and the HomeBiogas system are at the same height: up to 5 meters.
– If there is a 1-meter difference between the toilet bowl and the HomeBiogas system: up to 10 meters.

HomeBiogas relies on different groups of anaerobic bacteria that are responsible for the digestion of the organic matter. For the digestion to be successful some vital conditions must exist:

  1. An average day/ night temperature of at least 20C/ 68F.
  2. Never exceeding the maximum daily input of organic matter.
  3. Keeping the system’s pH in the optimal range.

HomeBiogas should be placed outdoors only, in a place where it can get maximum sunlight (not in the shade), on a stable floor, free from any obstructions. On top of this, it is very important to make sure that you meet the following conditions:

  1. To have a water source close to where you intend to place the system.
  2. To keep a free 0.5 meters from each of the system’s sides for easy access.

HomeBiogas should be only placed outdoors in a place where it can get maximum sunlight. HomeBiogas should be never placed inside the house, the garage, basement, etc…

Depends on the system. HomeBiogas 2 can be up to 10 meters from the stove, HomeBiogas 4 & 7 can be up to 18 meters from the stove.

HomeBiogas relies on bacteria that thrive on an average day/ night temperature of at least 20C/ 68F.  If you live in a place where the temperature is regularly below 10C/ 50F, we do not recommend HomeBiogas for you at this level. Having said that, we have some suggestions for wintertime, that might help you:

  • Add an electric submersible 500w water heater to your system. (We do not sell the water heater at the moment)
  • Place your system in a greenhouse ventilated from the top.
  • Feed with half the daily recommended amount.
  • Add 1 tablet of probiotics every day.

If you are in a place where the temperature is at or below freezing, please do not feed your system at all and drain at least 200L of the system’s liquids, as seen in the video.

BIO-FERTILIZER

How can the Bio-Fertilizer be used?

The Bio-Fertilizer can be used in three ways:

  1. Basic Dressing, meaning that you can use the Bio-Fertilizer about 1 month prior to planting to prepare the soil for planting.
  2. Topdressing, meaning that you can use the Bio-Fertilizer during planting up to 2-3 times per week.
  3. The water source for compost, will boost the composting process and add nutrients to the final product.

Remember, the Bio-Fertilizer should be diluted before use, simply mix 3 liters of water with every 1 liter of the Bio-Fertilizer.

Compost is created as a result of aerobic digestion of organic matter, it has been with us for many years now and it contributes to the soil structure. It’s a great product, in solid form, and is applied to the soil before planting, only.  The bio-fertilizer on the other hand is generated as a by-product of the anaerobic digestion of organic matter, it is liquid and can be applied to the plants both before and during planting, which is a huge advantage, in addition to the fact that it’s created on a daily basis, unlike compost which takes months to be completed.

Of course. Plants need many factors for healthy growth, including sunlight, water, mechanical support, organic matter, and essential nutrients. HomeBiogas bio-fertilizer includes 16 essential nutrients; Macro-nutrients like Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium, and Micro-nutrients like Iron, Manganese, Boron, and others.

There is no specific expiration date, but the beneficial volatile compounds that form in the digester might be lost with time, so it is better to use as soon as possible.

The fact that it comes in a liquid form is already an advantage! You can apply the bio-fertilizer before and during planting. There are many kinds of fertilizers, chemical and organic. Our fertilizer is organic, and its specialty is that it doesn’t only add nutrients to the soil, but also a large variety of organic molecules which increases the biological activity in the soil to create a healthy and fertile environment for our plants.

The quantity of fertilizer produced by the system is equal to the quantity of feeding. If you feed the system with 6 liters per day of food waste, you should receive 6 liters per day of bio-fertilizer. Consistent quality in the fertilizer comes from constantly feeding the system a diverse mix of organic waste. If you’ve fed the system with human waste, you should treat the liquid effluent that comes out of the fertilizer outlet and not use it as a fertilizer on plants.

In addition to creating biogas, HomeBiogas creates a Bio-Fertilizer packed full of macro and micronutrients which are in the right form for rapid absorption by plants. The bio-fertilizer can replace store-bought fertilizer, reduce pollution and save you money. The bio-fertilizer can increase growth and plants’ resilience to diseases. The bio-fertilizer is automatically ejected from HomeBiogas through the fertilizer outlet as you add more organic waste into the system each day.

BIO-TOILET

The Bio-Toilet is a superior alternative to a compost toilet. As it takes human waste to the digester, to be digested by the bacteria to create biogas on a daily basis,  without any human contact, in a process that is very easy, efficient and clean, where minimal maintenance is required from the user, simply flush and go!

When HomeBiogas system is fed with human waste, the effluent that comes out of the system’s outlet can not be used as a fertilizer as it should be treated. There are several options for the effluent’s treatment, that should all be done according to the local regulation:

  1. Connecting to the sewage system
  2. Connecting to a septic tank
  3. Treating in a drain-field or mulch basin

For more on this, please see our manuals section.

Yes, just like any toilet, the bio-toilet can be fed with human waste without the need to separate urine.
Remember: HomeBiogas 2 can be fed with up to 25 flushes per day in addition to 6 L of food waste per day.

Distance from the system:

– If the toilet bowl and the HomeBiogas system are at the same height: up to 5 meters.
– If there is a 1-meter difference between the toilet bowl and the HomeBiogas system: up to 10 meters.

The HomeBiogas Bio-Toilet is a superior alternative to regular compost toilets. It frees you to live in a self-sustainable manner by turning your pollutant body waste into a valuable resource. Using an anaerobic system, it decomposes waste and transforms it into renewable biogas for cooking. The Bio-Toilet is easy to install, safe, hassle-free, non-pollutant, environmentally friendly, and completes a full eco-cycle in your own home with no need for outside resources.

The Bio-Toilet kit comes with all the pipes that you need to connect the toilet to the HomeBiogas system, as well as detailed instructions for assembly and attachment. You can purchase one along with the purchase of your system or you can purchase one separately and attach it to your working system later.

Important to know:

  1. Dimensions of the Bio-Toilet sitting bowl:  46W/49L/35H (cm) / 18W/19.3L/13.5H in, weighs 12.5 kg.
  2. Bio-Toilet cannot be fed with toilet paper.
  3. Distance from the system:
    – If the toilet bowl and the HomeBiogas system are at the same height: up to 5 meters.
    – If there is a 1-meter difference between the toilet bowl and the HomeBiogas system: up to 10 meters.

DAILY CARE & MAINTENANCE

HomeBiogas does not produce any odors. As the active carbon filters treat odors and toxic gases like H2S.  Having said that, when you open your system to add food waste or manure, you will smell some odors that are normal and last for seconds only until you close the input sink again after you’re done with feeding.

Not at all! The system does not require any cleaning of sludge as the system is designed in a way that creates a very little sludge that has a negligible effect on the gas production and requires no cleaning or special treatment.

We’ve got wonderful news! HomeBiogas requires nearly no maintenance, as the only thing owners need to do is a filter change once in some months according to the system’s size.

HomeBiogas 2: once in 6 months

HomeBiogas 4: once in 3 months

HomeBiogas 7: once in 2 months

We also recommend adding 1-2 tablets of probiotics once a week, regularly through the input sink. Probiotics will help your system stay stable in terms of pH for the longer run, gives your bacteria a boost, and controls un-wanted smells.

DAILY INPUT AND OUTPUT

Wood shavings, straw, earth, sand, tree branches, paper, metal, plastic, glass, grass, or any non-organic liquid. It is also best to limit certain organic materials such as citrus peels, large pits from fruits such as avocado, etc. Citrus peels change the pH level and pits are difficult to digest.

Kitchen Waste: The system can digest food leftovers such as rice, cheese, meat, cooking oil, vegetable peels, fruit and any other “wet” food waste. Avoid feeding it large quantities of citrus fruit peels because they contain anti-bacterial oil which may reduce the effectiveness of the digestion.

Animal Manure: Animal manure, free from stones, straw and dirt, well-mixed with an equal quantity of water to create a wet slurry. You may also add dog or cat waste (without the sand or litter). It is recommended to wet the animal manure thoroughly, creating slurry before feeding it into the system. Dry waste will float to the surface of the digester tank and will not be properly digested.

Human Waste: It is possible to add human waste directly to the biodigester. With our bio-toilet addition, you can easily manage human waste in a hygienic and efficient way The human waste is transported directly into the digester through pipes and can be completely off-grid.

Yes, all HomeBiogas systems can be connected to an additional gas bag or two, however, this does not mean that HomeBiogas can be fed with more organic waste, it simply means that you will have more storage of biogas for when you need more gas.

The HomeBiogas system can store biogas at any given time indefinitely. If you generate more than you use of need, then the excess gas (above the gas tank’s volume) will be automatically released into the atmosphere by our specially designed pressure-release mechanism.

Feeding amounts change according to the size of the system and are very crucial for having a healthy and productive bacterial community. Feeding HomeBiogas with more than the bacteria are able to digest will cause a drop in the pH and an interruption of the gas production.

The countertop biogas stove comes as a part of any HomeBiogas system purchase. Taking it out does not affect the pricing of your package. Having said that, you can certainly upgrade to a built-it model through our additional products page here.

HomeBiogas comes with all you need for a perfect experience. Each HomeBiogas system comes with its suitable stove. HomeBiogas 2 comes with a single burner and it cannot be connected to another one as the biogas will be consumed very quickly due to the higher rate of gas consumption of the double burners which are designed for HomeBiogas 4 and 7.

No. HomeBiogas produces biogas on a daily basis and it cannot be mixed with another gas at all.

Our recommendation as a company is to use the daily biogas that is generated by the system for cooking using the biogas stove that’s provided with the system at the time of purchase, without compressing it.

HomeBiogas can be fed occasionally when organic waste is available. Remember!  it is important to not feed the system with more than the recommended amount each month. For example, HomeBiogas 2 can be fed with no more than 180 liters/ 50 gallons per month.

HomeBiogas should not be fed with any non-organic materials like metal, plastic, glass, paper, or any other non-organic liquids. HomeBiogas cannot be fed as well, with garden waste like straw, grass, dry leaves, twigs, tree branches, wood shavings, earth, and sand.

No, even though it is organic waste, HomeBiogas should not be fed with grass clippings, tree leaves, branches, sand, and earth as it is low in energy, takes longer time to be digested by the bacteria, and will end up only interrupting the daily production of gas.

There are several sizes of HomeBiogas. The smallest system, HomeBiogas 2 generates up to 600L of biogas per day, which are equal to two hours of cooking on a single stove, HomeBiogas 4, provides up to 3 hours of cooking using a double burner stove, which is up to 1200L of daily biogas, and HomeBiogas 7, which is the biggest unit available provides up to 6 hours of cooking on a double burner stove, an amount that is equal to 2500L of daily biogas.

The systems produce another wonderful by-product on a daily basis: the bio-fertilizer, in an amount equal to the amount of organic waste that the system is being fed with.

HomeBiogas can be fed with food waste, or animal manure, or human waste.  Each system has a daily maximum input of each of the above categories as described below:

HomeBiogas 2 – Daily feeding amounts:

Food waste: up to 6 liters per day. Or,

Manure: up to 15 L per day mixed with 30L of water. Or,

Human waste: up to 25 bio-toilet flushes per day

HomeBiogas 4 – Daily feeding amounts:

Food waste: up to 12 liters per day. Or,

Manure: up to 25L per day mixed with 50L of water.

HomeBiogas 7 – Daily feeding amounts:

Food waste: up to 20 liters per day. Or,

Manure: up to 36L per day mixed with 72L of water.

SAFETY

A. Certificates

HomeBiogas was designed and tested by engineers with years of field experience in biogas behind them. It received the European Community CE stamp of approval for safety. The company received 2 ISO certifications. Lastly, HomeBiogas was also tested and approved for safety and health by the Israeli Ministry of Environmental Protection and Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure.

B. Design

Our safety engineers specifically created a soft case so that the Biogas would be stored at low pressure. This ensures that it will not explode. Adding to this, HomeBiogas stores a relatively small amount of biogas which is a minuscule amount compared to other gas connections.

C. Science

The low Methane content in biogas means that it is flammable only at its ignition in the stove burner. Once it leaves the burner, it gets diffused into the air it loses its flammability.

A myth! It won’t explode, here’s why…

Biogas is made mainly from methane and the moment methane gas gets released into the air it loses its ability to ignite. Unlike LPG and propane, which sink to the ground and stay in a given space, biogas diffuses upwards to the sky leaving the premise immediately.

If surplus gas accumulates, HomeBiogas has a slow-release valve to release the pressure gradually. At the unlikely chance that the system leaks and ignites, it can only produce a momentary flame. Furthermore, the gas tank sits on top of the digester tank filled with liquid. This water would put out any momentary flame immediately. Lastly, the system works under very low pressure (15 Millibars) which makes it impossible to explode.

We have taken the following steps to validate the quality and the safety of our system:

  • The unit was audited for safety by a qualified safety engineer who is a biogas expert; this expert certified our system to be extremely safe. A full safety report is available upon request.
  • European CE certificate for safety.
  • HomeBiogas LTD is ISO 9001 (for quality) and 14001 (for environmental compliance) certified.
  • We provide international insurance coverage through product liability insurance that covers injuries or damages.
  • Our products were approved for installation and use by EU and Israeli governmental institutions that funded deployment projects in the Palestinian Authority and Israel.
  • Our products have been sold to thousands of users in over 106 countries.
In order to promote and advance standards for domestic biogas systems, we joined the International Standards Organization (ISO)TC255 Technical Consortium that is defining the standards for all types of biogas systems.

Currently, there is no international or national standard or regulation for domestic biogas systems. The reason is that this is a relatively new product and it takes time to write and certify standards.  As the standard-bearer for the new, evolving standards, even prior to their publication, we are designing our products to meet those standards once they are in place.

It most certainly is! In fact, the biogas produced in HomeBiogas is actually much safer than your current LPG (liquified petroleum gas) or propane gas tank for several reasons:

  • Unlike LPG cylinders or propane tanks, the biogas in the HomeBiogas system is not compressed. Our safety engineers intentionally created a soft case to hold the biogas so that it is stored at low pressure.
  • Since the gas is not compressed, the appliance stores a relatively small quantity compared to gas stored in cylinders. It is too little to pose a serious threat if ignited and is a minuscule amount compared to any other gas connection.
  • Methane, which makes up 60% of biogas, is lighter than air and will diffuse immediately into the atmosphere if released from the appliance for any reason. This occurs naturally in waste disposal facilities like landfills all the time. What is unique about HomeBiogas is that we are harnessing the energy potential of the potent greenhouse gas (methane) before it is released into the atmosphere.
  • Methane needs a concentration of 50% to be flammable. The moment it hits the air it becomes less concentrated, rendering it completely non-flammable.
